  • Dodgers have improved vs. lefties, now face Rodríguez

Matt Kartozian-Imagn Images Rodríguez is first southpaw starter faced by LA since April 27 The Dodgers will face Eduardo Rodríguez on Friday night in the second of four games this weekend against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Rodríguez represents a rarity of late, a left-handed starter facing Los Angeles. Rodríguez is the first southpaw starter against the Dodgers since Bailey Falter of the Pirates on April 27. which was 11 games ago. This a departure from the early part of the season, when the Dodgers faced eight left-handed starters in their first 15 games. They’ve only faced three in their last 23 games, before Friday night. The Dodgers as a team didn’t do well against left-handers in the early going. Through April 20, they were hitting just .196/.271/.369 with a 80 wRC+ against southpaws. But then the Dodgers scored 16 runs in two games at Wrigley Field started by lefties Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd, and the offense on the whole has been in good form ever since, averaging over seven runs per game. Now against left-handed pitching, the Dodgers on the season are hitting .248/316/.481 with a 122 wRC+, the latter fifth-best in the majors. They also did well against Falter, scoring seven off of him in an April 27 win over the Pirates. But mostly the Dodgers have gotten right against lefties by feasting on relievers. Against southpaws out of the bullpen in their last five series, against the Pirates, Marlins (twice), Braves, and now D-backs, the Dodgers are 14-for-40 against lefty relievers with four home runs, three doubles, and a triple, hitting .350/.435/.775. That includes two strikeouts by Arizona lefty Jalen Beeks in the seventh inning on Thursday night, his only two batters faced. The Dodgers will have to deal with Beeks and the D-backs’ other left-handed reliever, José Castillo, all weekend. This is where being without Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman, two of the Dodgers’ most potent weapons against southpaws, will hurt. But first comes Rodríguez on the mound Friday night, plus what’s left of the game after he’s done. Friday game info Teams: Dodgers at Diamondbacks Stadium: Chase Field, Phoenix Start time: 6:40 p.m. PT TV: SportsNet LA Radio: AM 570 (English), KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish)

  • Hyeseong Kim, James Outman, and filling in the gaps

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images Kim has started four of six games since getting activated, Outman has started two of his three games this week, while Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernández are on the injured list. The Dodgers have two lineup regulars on the injured list at the moment in Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman, who are second and tied for third, respectively, on the team in home runs, among other things. Edman is eligible to return from his right ankle inflammation as early as Saturday but Dave Roberts already told reporters this week that the infielder/outfielder likely wouldn’t be activated until after the Dodgers are done playing on turf this weekend at Chase Field. Edman on Thursday took at-bats in a simulated game against Emmet Sheehan, who is in Arizona rehabbing from his Tommy John surgery from last May 15. #Dodgers Emmett Sheehan (TJ surgery) has progressed to throwing to hitters -- including Tommy Edman today. Edman has also done some running. Eligible to come off IL Saturday but probably won't be activated until next week— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) May 8, 2025 Hernández has a Grade 1 adductor strain and is eligible to be activated as early as next Friday, May 16, so there will be some spread between when Edman returns and Hernández does. Holding down the fort while Edman and Hernández are injured are Hyeseong Kim, who has played all three of second base, shortstop, and center field, and James Outman, who gives the Dodgers a true center fielder while Andy Pages shifts to right field. Both Kim and Outman hit left-handed. Kim has the added dimension of speed, which has already been on display on the bases in his six games active to date. Outman finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting just two years ago but has struggled ever since. Outman had a 36-percent strikeout rate in Triple-A before getting called up, and has five strikeouts in nine plate appearances since getting called up, but also homered Wednesday and nearly did on Thursday night. Today’s question is when Edman returns, does Kim stay or does Outman stay on the active roster?

  • Dodgers injured list tracker

Photo by Luke Hales/Getty Images Keeping track of every Dodgers player on the injured list, paternity leave, bereavement, and family emergency lists all season Every Dodgers player who ends up on the injured list during the 2025 season, we will track here. That includes the concussion IL, which is a minimum of seven days, or the standard IL, which is 10 days at minimum for position players and 15 days for pitchers, as well as the 60-day injured list. We’ll also track players on paternity leave, the bereavement list, or the family medical emergency list. Basically any time a Dodgers player misses time that requires a roster move, we’ll note it here. During the 2024 season, 28 different Dodgers missed time. In 2023, there were 34 such players. Every injured list placement this season will also be chronicled on our 40-man roster page, which like this post will be updated throughout the 2025 season. Gavin Stone was the first Dodger to land on the injured list in 2025, placed on the 60-day IL on February 11 to make roster room for the signing of Kiké Hernández. Stone is expected to miss the entire season after shoulder surgery in October. Two days later, River Ryan was placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for Clayton Kershaw. Ryan had Tommy John surgery in August 2024 and is expected to be out for all of 2025 as well. In finalizing their opening day roster on March 18, the Dodgers placed nine more pitchers on the injured list, including seven on the 15-day IL plus Brusdar Graterol and Michael Grove on the 60-day IL. Note: if you are on a mobile device, these tables will show up best in landscape mode.

  • Eduardo Quintero homers twice in Quakes blowout

Mike Sirota with three hits among California League batting leaders Down on the Dodgers farm, it was all dramatic one-run games, except in Low-A, where Rancho Cucamonga won 13-0. Player of the day: Eduardo Quintero had a big game in the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ 13-0 victory, with two home runs, a single, a walk, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Quintero is ranked the eighth-best Dodgers prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 19-year-old outfielder now leads the California League with six home runs. Triple-A Oklahoma City The Oklahoma City Comets spotted the Albuquerque Isotopes (Rockies) five runs in the first inning when rahabbing Dodgers relief pitcher Michael Kopech walked all five batters he faced in the first inning. All those runners scored, but four Comets pitchers pitched a two-hit shutout from there, while the Comets came back. It was an unfortunate outing for Kopech, who threw 18 consecutive balls at one point. The Comets began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth. Singles by Alex Freeland and Dalton Rushing set the table, and an error and groundout plated two runs. They added a run in the sixth on a Hunter Feduccia double, and another in the seventh on a Michael Chavis single to cut the deficit to one. Alex Freeland can play a little shortstop, huh? pic.twitter.com/dg836KqQBs— Oklahoma City Comets (@OKC_comets) May 9, 2025 Things didn’t look promising when the first two batters struck out in the bottom of the ninth, but walks to Rushing and Ryan Ward set up the game-winning two-run double by Chavis. COMEBACK COMPLETE!Michael Chavis smokes a two-run double with two outs in the ninth inning to give the Comets a 6-5 win! pic.twitter.com/zelipcpdUk— Oklahoma City Comets (@OKC_comets) May 9, 2025 Double-A Tulsa In the first game of a doubleheader Diamondbacks affiliate the Amarillo Sod Poodles defeated the Tulsa Drillers 6-5. Jared Karros started for the Drillers and lasted five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) and absorbing the loss. A Chris Newell double and a Damon Keith single gave Karros a one-run lead before taking the mound. But the Sod poodles made him pay for walking two of the first four batters, who then scored on a two out double by Caleb Roberts. An error by shortstop Sean McLain allowed Roberts to score, putting the Sod Poodles up 3-1, and they never surrendered the lead, withstanding a late Drillers rally, and holding on for the 6-5 win. In the second game, the Sod Poodles scored three runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh to overcome a 4-0 deficit and sweep the doubleheader. Jerming Rosario started for the Drillers and pitched five scoreless innings before giving up a single and a walk to open the bottom of the sixth inning. Jorge Benetez replaced Rosario and gave up a three-run homer to LuJames Groover. The walk-off run was scored off Ronan Kopp on a fielder’s choice. Ezequiel Pagan hit a two-run homer for the Drillers. High-A Great Lakes The Great Lake Loons squared off against the Reds’ affiliate, the Dayton Dragons, and it took all nine innings for the Loons to catch up 2-2, after giving up a two-run homer in the first to Dragons first baseman John Michael Faile. Down by a run in the ninth, the Loons manufactured the tying run with a single, walk, sacrifice, and a groundout. But Loons reliever Robinson Ortiz threw a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th, allowing Johnny Ascanio to score the winning run. Josue De Paula had two hits for the Loons. Low-A Rancho Cucamonga The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes obliterated the Visalia Rawhide (Diamondbacks) 13-0. Sterling Patrick started for the Quakes and pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five, against two hits and no walks. Three other Quake relievers completed the shutout, with Jholbran Herder going three innings and getting credit with the win. Highly regarded 19-year-old outfielder Eduardo Quintero had a big game with two home runs and a single, and is now hitting .295, .966. Mike Sirota also had three hits and his 1.066 OPS leads the California League, while his .348 batting average is second.
